I Will Not Give Up!

I know I’ve already said it, but I really have not been running much at all lately and I can’t stop thinking about it. I really don’t want to stop running, but my motivation has fell by the wayside. I think I go through these periods every few months or so and I won’t give up, I will always fight through them. I will come out of it and be a confident runner again. I’ve not only been slacking on running, but all forms of exercise. This week I’ve started to come out of the slump and turn it all around. I’m starting slowly and I will hopefully be back to the top real soon. I need to make a schedule and stick to it. Today I woke up a little earlier than usual and was planning on going on a run, but decided I would put it off until a little later. I was thinking about meeting up with the Hellgate Road Runners, which is the Astoria running group. They have 3-4 weekly runs and one of them is tonight. I would love to be a part of them, but I just can’t seem to kick my ass into gear to go. Anyway, I randomly fell upon some running quotes earlier and they totally motivated me to just get out there and run. I felt pretty full of breakfast and coffee, but I decided to go anyway because my mind was mentally pumped to get out there.

These were my favorite quotes.

“Running is the greatest metaphor for life, because you get out of it what you put into it.”
-Oprah Winfrey

“If you want to become the best runner you can be, start now. Don’t spend the rest of your life wondering if you can do it.”
-Priscilla Welch

“Those who think they have not time for bodily exercise will sooner or later have to find time for illness.”
-Edward Stanley

I went out and ran until I couldn’t run anymore. I didn’t plan any route I kind of just went with it. I felt really slow in the beginning, but came out strong.

  • Distance: 4.2 Miles
  • Time: 39:40
  • Pace: 9:26

I really want to become a hardcore runner over this winter. Well, more than I was last year anyway. Last year I wouldn’t run outside under 45°F and I am hoping to push that to 30°F this year. I just have to wear the proper clothing and get my breathing under control. I would like to run outside 1-2 times a week over the winter if at all possible.

I came home from my run and was looking over all of my runs from the past year and they made me feel good and motivated. I was feeling slightly disappointed with myself because I haven’t been as strong lately. My original goal was to run 750 miles this year, but I’m pretty sure I won’t reach that goal, but I know I will come close. I should be happy because I am almost at the 600 mile mark and yeah maybe it isn’t as much as I had anticipated, but it’s a hell of a lot more than I ever would’ve imagined myself running just 2 years ago! I am happy with how far I have come. I have run 6 races this year and I kicked ass at every single one of them, even my triathlon!

Highlights from Race Season and Total Mileage Throughout the Year

April: My first 10K Race and Total Mileage: 60.49

May: My first 12K Race and Total Mileage: 71.24

June: 5K PR: 24:42 and Total Mileage: 68.86

July: My first Triathlon! and Total Mileage: 66.95

August: 5K Race and Total Mileage: 75.2

September: Personal Distance Record: 10.8 Miles! and Total Mileage: 52.75

October: 10K Nike Human Race and Total Mileage: TBD

There you have it! I shouldn’t feel so bad for slacking a little right now because I know it won’t last. I’ve had a lot of firsts this year and I ran a lot of races. I was really hoping to run at least one race per month until it got real cold, but I did end up missing September. I’m not too bummed though because another goal I had was to run 10 miles before I had moved to New York and I busted out almost 11 miles and shattered that goal. I am happy with that being my accomplishment of the month. Although there won’t be a Half Marathon this year like I was REALLY hoping, I know there will be more than one next year and I absolutely can not wait!!!

Sorry for the boring post, it was more for me anyway to get it all out and realize that I really shouldn’t feel too bad.

Mike’s Deli

When I still had cable I would watch Food Network religiously and ever since moving to New York I have been trying to remember all of the good places that were featured. One thing that has always stuck out in my head was this specific eggplant parm that was made by a guy in New York and it was featured on Bobby Flay’s Throwdown. Ever since seeing that episode I have been literally DYING to try the eggplant parm from the opponent, who obviously won because it looked freakin fantastic! I have just gotten around to seeking out the location of this eggplant parm and turns out it is in the Bronx on Arthur Avenue at a place called Mike’s Deli. I HAVE TO GO THERE THIS WEEKEND! I absolutely can not wait to eat that cheesy goodness!

An Obsession with Burgers

Now that my make up effects gig is over I am jobless, but that does not mean I have nothing to do! Between yesterday and today I have done 6 loads of laundry and still have one left to do! The curtains in our bedroom are up, the boxes are dwindling and the dvd shelves are up. I feel like the apartment as a whole is finally coming to completion. Now all that is left are the shelves for the bedroom that we still have to purchase and a rug for the living room. I seriously promise, pictures are coming!

Sooo…I had the Nike Human Race on Saturday morning. I was a little nervous about it because I have been really slacking in the running department. Had to get up real early on Saturday morning and so did my amazing boyfriend. I am happy he came with me even though he had minimal sleep all week! There were so many runners, it was awesome! I love big races. I barely got there on time, I literally go to my place in the start line and had like 3 minutes. The race went well, but honestly it was a little boring. We just went around in a a circle 2 1/2 times and I was kind of expecting it to be a lot better. Of course, like at every race I always look back and think I could’ve pushed myself harder. This was my second 10K ever and I came in at 57:30. It’s also my first race where I did not do better than the last. It’s a little disappointing, but I am still happy with my time am glad that I could run the whole way. I am also annoyed that the race results that are posted online only reveal the clock time and not the chip time. It was a good thing I brought my watch because I didn’t cross the finish line until a good 2 minutes after the gun went off. Oh and ultimately I wore way too many clothes because I was HOT! I should not have worn pants or two shirts.

Anyway, onwards…today I had some amazing food and it was all prepared by me! This morning I made really good oatmeal with:

  • banana
  • flaxseed
  • peanut butter
  • cinnamon
  • honey bunches of oats
  • honey

For lunch I made a repeat meal. Yesterday I threw together a few things and made it into a burrito for dinner, but today I had the leftovers and made another one for lunch.

This was so good and I am going to make this often. All I did was saute up some broccoli, chickpeas and a little bit of cooked rice with some soy sauce until it was heated through. I then put some salsa and hummus in the wrap and folded it all together. Then I put it back in the pan to give it a nice crisp on both sides and topped it with sour cream and more salsa.

I have been having unhealthy cravings for burgers lately and I have no idea why. I decided to make some bison burgers tonight so in between all of my laundry havoc I managed to make it to the grocery store to pick up the necessary ingredients.

Mushroom Cheese Bison Burger and a caesar side salad.

Derek and I were really craving burgers last night so we did a little bit of research online and decided on a place called Bareburger. They specialize in a variety of different burgers and practically everything they serve is organic. You have a huge list of options for what kind of burger you want. They have piedmontese beef, turkey, grilled chicken, veggie burger, portabella mushroom, bison, elk, ostrich, or lamb! They also had a great list of all natural cane soda and milk shakes.

They served water in these great little pitchers. I totally want one of these!

I went with the vanilla creme soda and Derek got the cane cola.

The specials they had going on were amazing! I knew what I wanted right away. The Spicy Bacon Elk Burger and it was only $10! I was already impressed with this place before our food even came. Derek got the same burger and we decided to split a basket of fries that came with three different dipping sauces.

The fries reminded me of  french fries you would get at a fair, which is a good thing! They were delicious. There was curry ketchup, which I actually didn’t like very much. Derek loved it, but I felt like I was just eating a bottle of curry powder. Then there was chipotle mayo and some kind of bareburger ‘special sauce’ I enjoyed the other two sauces, but honestly they were nothing spectacular. I still enjoyed the fries a lot though.

This burger was amazing! The bun was excellent, it held everything together nicely and it was the perfect amount of bread to meat ratio. It was cooked just as I asked and it was just the right size. This was my first time eating elk and I must say it was tasty. The sauce was nice and spicy and I could taste everything on the burger separately and was therefore able to enjoy every aspect of it. I ate the whole thing and didn’t feel too full at the end of it. We sat for a while contemplating a milkshake for dessert and we ended up getting a warm brownie with ice cream AND a peanut butter and jelly milk shake! Mmmmm, it was so good!

Sorry for the blurry picture.

We were STUFFED after this! The shake was humongous and it we were able to fill up two glasses with just one shake. It was a perfect size to split, but we definitely didn’t need the brownie. The milk shake was nice and thick and it really did taste like peanut butter and jelly. I’m going to have to re-create this myself at home.

Overall this was a fantastic find and I was impressed with everything I had. The prices surprised me considering everything was organic. It was definitely reasonably priced and I can’t wait to go back. I think I’m going to try the Ostrich next time!

Rating: 5 out of 5

Oh and they are supposed to be getting organic beer and wine very shortly. They are just waiting for their Liquor License to be approved. Let’s pray they have stuff on tap!

My First Movie Premiere

I’ve just finished up my last week at the production company that I was interning at. Starting Sunday I will be working on a lesbian vampire film that was filmed last February and is doing a week of reshoots in order to finish up the film. I’m really excited about it because it’s a makeup effects job. It’s an unpaid job, but it is something that I really WANT to be doing. I have a good amount of work to do and it will help expand my resume and portfolio. I have to admit, I am slightly nervous about, but definitely confident at the same time. It should be fun, the people that I have met are really cool and laid back so I’m not worried about working with any uptight assholes. I’m sure they will be really long and exhausting days but it will definitely be worth it.

I also have my 10K Nike Human Race next Saturday! I’m really excited about it, but at the same time I’m not sure how well I am going to do. Like I said, this week will be exhausting and to have to wake up on Saturday morning and be at Prospect park for 8 am will be a feat in itself. Following my race, Derek and I are headed to Connecticut for a Halloween Party that I am slightly unprepared for. I haven’t been keeping up with my running as much as I should be. I’m not worried about running the 6 miles, but it’s definitely not going to be anything amazing. My running has been cut back by a lot! I’m a little bummed about it, but I’m trying not to be too hard on myself because I did just move to New York and completely changed my life around here. I’m so glad to have a running buddy though! Speaking of which, Matt has really been kicking my butt with speed, I can barely keep up with him now. It’s starting to get very cold, I need to get a job that pays so I can join a gym and therefore keep up with my running a bit more easily at the gym.

One amazing thing that did come out of my internship was being able to attend my first red carpet movie premiere. The company I was interning for produced the film ‘Motherhood’ and it had it’s New York premiere this past Wednesday night. I worked at the door with Matt checking people in and handing out tickets. It was pretty stressful and things could’ve gone more smoothly, but it was all okay in the end. We didn’t stay for the movie, instead we met up with Derek and a few friends and drank some wine. Matt and I headed back early so we could be there to let people in at the after party. Now that I think about it, I’m really sad that I didn’t get any pictures of Derek and I because we looked good! Although Derek was lucky enough to get his photo taken by a press photographer that was there. Check it out, he is totally a celebrity!

But yeah it was a pretty amazing party. I saw Uma Thurman and Anthony Edwards. They are probably the first real celebrities I’ve ever seen. It was an open bar and yep I got way too drunk and of course that is how I got the gash on my face. I can never seem to make it through a night safely when I drink. I was apparently squatting down in front of our apartment and I lost my balance and fell over and scraped my face and my knee on the ground. It was an extremely fun and eventful night, but I really hate getting that drunk. I need to realize that my tolerance is nothing and I shouldn’t drink more than like 4 beers. Ever.
