I did Key Workout # 2 yesterday, which was a tempo run. I was scheduled to run 2 miles easy, 3 miles at short tempo pace and then 1 mile easy. My short tempo pace was 8:30, which seemed pretty manageable. It was a great day for a run, who knew 33° would ever seem warm. Yes, it was 33 outside and I thought it was beautiful and perfect running weather, who have I become?
I had a very busy day yesterday and I wasn’t able to get out there until 2:45. I always try to avoid running at this hour because of all the people out and it’s when school lets out. I felt very positive at the start of the run and I didn’t let anything bother me. I did have to stop quite a few times in the beginning because of cars and stop lights, but I kept a pretty good attitude about it all. After all I was supposed to be taking it easy for the first 2 miles.
The fast 3 miles in the middle were nice and smooth for the most part. I hit a few hills, but stayed strong during most of them. I tried my hardest to stay as close to 8:30 as possible, but I found it extremely difficult. I decided to just run strong and fast, but without burning myself out. That is what a tempo run should be anyway. I was dying by mile 4 and could not wait until mile 5 to hit! I knew once mile 5 came I could slow down and take it a little easier. I made it though, I’m not sure how close I got to the 8:30 average, but I gave it everything I had and I think I managed to do a pretty good job, considering it was my first real tempo run.
Unfortunately I have not figured out my Garmin watch completely and I didn’t discover the auto lap feature until today. If I had this enabled I would have been able to figure out my mile splits and would therefore know how close I was to those 8:30 mile splits. Oh well, there is always next week!
