Baked Mac & Cheese

As I had mentioned earlier, I made Alton Brown’s Macaroni and Cheese last night for dinner. This was my first real time actually making baked macaroni and cheese. It was quite eventful, in my opinion. I had a lot of pressure from Derek also because he typically doesn’t like mac and cheese (I know, who doesn’t LIKE macaroni and cheese!?). I was really hoping he would like this one, especially because it is Alton Brown’s recipe.

Anyway, it was delicious! It had a ton of flavor and the consistency was perfect. The did not have onions in my version though, that was the only ingredient I was missing. It still tasted great without it. I am going to eat some leftovers tonight, that is certain! Here is the recipe, if you are interested. Baked Macaroni and Cheese

We paired it with a Southern Tier ‘Cherry Saison’ which we have had for probably almost 6 months.

The beer was delicious. Not at all what I had expected. I thought it would be a lot sweeter than it was. It’s actually 8% alcohol and has a very strong bitter, hoppiness to it. It went well with our meal.

For dessert, I ate a yummy peanut butter ball! These things are amazing and I must have the recipe. They are made by a friend of Derek’s family and I look forward to them every Christmas.

I gotta run, I am working on making Roquefort Cheese Balls for the New Year’s Eve Party tonight!

One Long Day

Went out to Central Park again this morning to meet up with the TNT group, but let me tell you that my commute there was not pleasant. at all.  I left 10 minutes earlier today than last week and it still took me FOREVER to get there and I got there literally just in time. I was so annoyed, the C train took soooooooo long to arrive and once it did it kept stopping every 10 inches! It probably took me like an hour and 20 minutes to get there, which is ridiculous!

I bundled up good today because man it was COLD out there! I believe it was about 28° out there. I was worried about being cold, but once again after about a mile or 2 I was all nice and warm and felt great! The first 4 miles I ran with these two girls that are training for their first marathon in Paris! I almost wished I had signed up for that. It sounds so exciting and what a great excuse to go to Paris. I ended up running the last 4 miles by myself, which was fine, but somehow I always end up on my own. It was a great run though, I felt pretty strong throughout the whole thing.

I came home and jumped in bed with Derek because he was still sleeping and looked so nice and warm. Then I immediately scarfed down some steel cut oats. Sorry I ate them too fast to take a picture.

Derek and I met up with Sandy, our friend Cory’s mom and she brought us out to lunch at the Heartland Brewery, which was so nice, Thanks Sandy! Again, no picture, but I got a cheese steak with spicy french fries. It was good, but not great.

I loved this Christmas ornament sculpture they had! They also had a display of giant christmas lights, it was pretty awesome!

After that we headed over to Union Square to hit up the Holiday Market that was going on. The only thing I bought:

A BELGIAN WAFFLE! from Waffles & Dinges. It was delicious and they also had a sign posted that they are on Throwdown with Bobby Flay and their episode will air January 20th I think. I bet that they win that one.

It was a good day in all, but my legs sure are tired, a bath would be nice! I will leave you a picture of my delicious dinner that I had last night and a picture of my whale of cat!

Thanksgiving Gluttony

So, I haven’t posted in quite some time, but what better time to update than Thanksgiving! I love Thanksgiving, it is all about the food for me. Spending time at home with my family and enjoying my parents cooking is why it’s so great. There are some amazing recipes within my family and I would love to share a few with you. I have a few of them that are being sent to me sometime over the weekend, so as soon as I receive them, I will share!

 

 

My mom’s specialty is her stuffed mushrooms! They are buried in this picture, but this is one recipe I would like to share. As soon as I get it, I am going to make them and take some delicious pictures. Also, my dad’s mashed potatoes are flawless and I am a huge sucker for baked sweet potatoes. Yum! My sister Gina also made homemade dinner rolls, that were more like biscuits, which is even better in my opinion. They were great!

 

I tried to keep my dessert plate small, but I was still stuffed by the time I was done. We still had to go and eat some over at Derek’s parents house. There was Coconut Custard Pie made with Soy Milk that my mom and I made, then there was Sweet Potato Pie made by my sister Kerri and she also made that chocolate cake, which tasted like fudge, it was really sweet, but had a great texture and I really enjoyed it. I think the Sweet Potato Pie was my favorite though! I have never had it before and I liked how it had a a real subtle flavor. It wasn’t too sweet, but still tasted like a decadent dessert.

At Derek’s house I ate some of the famous Pineapple Surprise made my his mom and some green bean casserole. I also had a piece of sugar free Apple Cranberry Pie which was really tart and delicious. I was over the edge by this point and I went to bed stuffed and I surprisingly woke up hungry.

I love food and I can’t wait until I am hungry again so I can make a Turkey, Stuffing, Cranberry Sauce and Gravy Sandwich!

BAREBURGER

Derek and I were really craving burgers last night so we did a little bit of research online and decided on a place called Bareburger. They specialize in a variety of different burgers and practically everything they serve is organic. You have a huge list of options for what kind of burger you want. They have piedmontese beef, turkey, grilled chicken, veggie burger, portabella mushroom, bison, elk, ostrich, or lamb! They also had a great list of all natural cane soda and milk shakes.

They served water in these great little pitchers. I totally want one of these!

I went with the vanilla creme soda and Derek got the cane cola.

The specials they had going on were amazing! I knew what I wanted right away. The Spicy Bacon Elk Burger and it was only $10! I was already impressed with this place before our food even came. Derek got the same burger and we decided to split a basket of fries that came with three different dipping sauces.

The fries reminded me of  french fries you would get at a fair, which is a good thing! They were delicious. There was curry ketchup, which I actually didn’t like very much. Derek loved it, but I felt like I was just eating a bottle of curry powder. Then there was chipotle mayo and some kind of bareburger ‘special sauce’ I enjoyed the other two sauces, but honestly they were nothing spectacular. I still enjoyed the fries a lot though.

This burger was amazing! The bun was excellent, it held everything together nicely and it was the perfect amount of bread to meat ratio. It was cooked just as I asked and it was just the right size. This was my first time eating elk and I must say it was tasty. The sauce was nice and spicy and I could taste everything on the burger separately and was therefore able to enjoy every aspect of it. I ate the whole thing and didn’t feel too full at the end of it. We sat for a while contemplating a milkshake for dessert and we ended up getting a warm brownie with ice cream AND a peanut butter and jelly milk shake! Mmmmm, it was so good!

We were STUFFED after this! The shake was humongous and it we were able to fill up two glasses with just one shake. It was a perfect size to split, but we definitely didn’t need the brownie. The milk shake was nice and thick and it really did taste like peanut butter and jelly. I’m going to have to re-create this myself at home.

Overall this was a fantastic find and I was impressed with everything I had. The prices surprised me considering everything was organic. It was definitely reasonably priced and I can’t wait to go back. I think I’m going to try the Ostrich next time!

Oh and they are supposed to be getting organic beer and wine very shortly. They are just waiting for their Liquor License to be approved. Let’s pray they have stuff on tap!

Okay I’m a little late posting this, but what else is new right? Derek and I have been dating for 6 years since this past Wednesday, the 23rd. I can’t believe it’s been so long, time really does fly. We had an amazing anniversary. On Wednesday we had our first paid job. We helped film a live webcast of a business conference that was based on electric transporation. It was pretty interesting, but a pretty long day overall. The conference was over around 230 and after that we packed up all the equipment and ended up going out for a drink with some of the ‘business’ people who put the conference on. We went to a place called The Algonquin, which is a hotel and they had a really nice bar inside. We both had Hemingways, which was a pretty girl drink, but they were damn good. It was the suggested drink of the afternoon. The woman in charge paid for every one’s drink!

We came home, got changed and did some research on where we should go out to eat. We couldn’t find anything that really sparked our interest. We were really hoping to find a place with good food and even better beer. We decided to just stay in the area and walk around until we fell upon a good place to go. We ended up walking for a lot longer than I had expected, well what seemed a lot longer because my feet were absolutely killing me. I wore shoes that were apparently too small for my feet.

Anyways, we finally decided on this place called Sanford’s.

It was a small place and pretty dark inside, but the menu looked fantastic. They did have a great beer selection, but unfortunately nothing was on tap. It was our anniversary though and we knew we had to go all out with everything we ordered.

First up, the appetizer; it was a special for the night: Mussels

The Jenlain was Derek’s first, which was REALLY GOOD! I don’t know why I didn’t order one.

The mussels were good, definitely some of the best I’ve had, but nothing has yet to live up to the mussels from the Portsmouth Brewery. I was really impressed with this place, we will definitely be going back! The atmosphere was great and the service even better. The manager/owner came over to our table towards the end of the night and introduced himself to us. We had a good little chat and he said that he is a wine guy and his brother is the beer guy  (They also have a HUGE selection of wine). He gave us his card and when the waitress gave us our check she said  ‘The dessert is on Chris (the owners name), Welcome to Sanfords. We couldn’t believe he gave us free dessert. We were totally high rollers that night!

Derek got this mountain of pork that literally fell of the bone and was so delicious with garlic mashed potatoes. He always manages to order the most extravagant thing on the menu.

Derek and I both ordered this beer for our second round. It won the ‘Best Beer in the World’ award from Beer Advocate in 2008. GOOD!

We split this bottle for our dessert beverage. It was really good, but I was STUFFED by the time we left.

It was a great anniversary! I love Derek so much and we really are perfect for each other! 🙂

Oh yeah, we FINALLY have internet in our apartment so you can expect a lot more posts more frequently! I’m going out to the Heartland Brewery tonight in Union Sq. Be back later with a recap on that.

I had to post these because I can’t wait to try them out. I know I say I’m going to make everything, but really I am definitely going to be making the cupcake cones. I remember these from when I was a kid and I never realized how simple they really were.
